More Detailed Info.

Not a single pirate, but an entire society of pirates with some connection to the Ottoman Empire. The Barbary Pirates were the original Al Qaeda. They operated throughout the Mediterranean Sea until the mid 1800's. For several hundred years the Barbary Corsairs as they were also known, were quite successful. Neither the British, French, nor Spanish dared take them on militarily. By the early 1800's they were in a general decline, into this arena came the U.S. Navy, which fought two wars with the corsairs. During one engagement of these wars, the U.S.S Philadelphia was captured in the port of Tripoli, and was later destroyed by U.S. Sailors. From these wars comes the line "To the shores of Tripoli. Thomeas Jefferson is reputed to have said, referring to the Corsairs "If we fight the mohamadeans now, we must be prepared to fight them for eternity" Thomas Jefferson: Author of America, Christopher Hitchens
