Calico

Early Life:

How he became a pirate:
John Rackham was a quartermaster of the pirate ship 'Treasure' [Neptune] under the leadership of captain Charles Vane. When Captain Vane refused to attack a French ship that was brimming with loot, Rackam took over as the Treasure's captain.

His main territory: Bahamas

Famous/Infamous for:
Two women, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, have made Calico Jack famous. It started when Calico Jack first stole Anne's heart, and together, they stole a ship an sailed between Haiti and Bermuda. He and Anne bore a child but left is in Cuba so they could continue pirating. While looting a ship he noticed on the ships crew log a name he remembered: Mark Read. He signed Mark up to his ship only to see his Anne becoming more and more attached to this young lad. It turned out that Mark Read was really MARY Read and the whole matter was put right when it aws found out Anne was just happy to have another woman on board.

Notable battles:
On November 23, while at sea they encountered a French warship. Captain Vane decided to retreat rather than board the warship. The crew disagreed with his actions and a mutiny was set up against him. The crew left Vane on the shore of an unidentified beach and sailed away in a ship called "The Treasure". They decided to make Jack their new captain. Jack later returned and successfully boarded and took over the french vessel.

Finally met his end:
Governor Woodes Rogers had caught wind that Jack was behind the stealing of an anchored ship named 'William' in Nassau harbor. He sent two large ships with 45 men to find Jack. At this time he was busy attacking fishing vessels near Jamaica and for the next month, not knowing of his wanting, continued to do so. In early October near Nigril Bay, Captain Johnathan Barret caught up with the stolen ship that Jack was on. Jack immediately set sail trying to escape, but by ten o'clock that night, they had finally been overthrown. By now Jack and his crew were very drunk. Barret asked them to surrender and in response, the crew shot off a pistol and shouted foul words. A duel began but was hardly fought. The drunken crew was overthrown and surrendered soon after. The two women on board however were sober and fought hard not to be captured. In the end, the whole crew was caught. On November 16th, Jack and eleven of his crew men were sentenced to death by hanging in St. Jago de la Vega, Jamaica. The 17th, Jack was hanged. The women were testified as well but they 'plead their bellies' stating they were both pregnant. It has never been proven if this was true or not, but nevertheless they were sentenced to remain in jail until they had given birth. Anne witnessed Jack's hanging and had reportedly said "she was sorry to see him there, but if he had fought like a man, he need not have been hanged like a dog". Rackham's body was hanged on an island near Port Royal called Deadman's Cay, now fittingly named Rackham's Cay. Thus ended the life of the pirate Calico Jack. While he only plundered mainly local small vessels in the Caribbean, he is unique in having had not one, but two, female pirates disguised as men in his crew.

Biggest myths:

He and Anne Bonny had a threesome relationship with Mary Read. Fact is Mary had a fiance aboard.
