How he became a pirate:
Kidd was appointed to captain the ship "The Adventure Galley," and his assignment was to capture all French ships, and the pirates of Madagascar. Though Kidd had a powerful ship and plenty of weapons, he thought his crew was lacking, so he recruited a gang of cutthroats in New York and sailed for Madagascar. However, the cutthroats proved to be undependable, and left Kidd's ship to join the pirates. The rest of Kidd's crew declared mutiny unless Kidd agreed to become a pirate himself and attack other ships. Kidd refused and in the battle with his crew, he killed a man. This changed Kidd for life, and he decided that maybe he had a taste for killing and blundering after all.

Trivia: Kidd's farewell speech: My name was Captain Kidd, when I sail'd, when I sail'd, And so wickedly I did, God's laws I did forbid, When I sail'd, when I sail'd. I roam'd from sound to sound, And many a ship I found, And then I sunk or burn'd, When I sail'd. I murder'd William Moore, And laid him in his gore, Not many leagues from shore, When I sail'd. Farewell to young and old, All jolly seamen bold, You're welcome to my gold, For I must die, I must die. Farewell to Lunnon town, The pretty girls all round, No pardon can be found, and I must die, I must die, Farewell, for I must die. Then to eternity, in hideous misery, I must lie, I must lie.

More Detailed Bio

William Kidd was a privateer, given permission by the British Crown to take French ships. Kidd set out from England in search of French ships, and found none for a long time. His crew near mutiny, Kidd attempted to restore order by killing a crewman as a warning to others, as was common practice at the time, most British captains were much like captain Bligh in that regard, a fact which made piracy tempting. Kidd eventually found a French vessel, and took it. He returned to England only to find that in the interim a peace treaty had been signed with France, making his letter of marque invalid, and his actions potentially an act of war. Kidd was declared a pirate, given a show trial and hung to avoid renewed conflict with France.

William Kidd was NOT A PIRATE... He was wrongly accused. It was all his crew that caused the problem. In fact, they weren't even his crew. When he was given the position of privateer(which he was reluctant to do in the first place) he chose a crew of family men that he know would have no taste for piracy. The problem was that they were also inexperienced at sailing. They failed to salute one of the naval ships as they were leaving port, so they were boarded, Kidd's crew taken for "proper training", and in return Kidd was given a crew of naval rejects. During one expedition, Kidd mistakenly attacked an innocent Dutch vessel. He was reprimanded and tried to be more careful with his targets. The next encounter brought him to another innocent vessel which he was going to leave alone. His crew had other plans and sought to mutiny. Kidd threw a bucket at the pirate instigating the riot, knocking him out. A few weeks later, he died from plague. Kidd abandoned his crew and got who he could onto a new ship with the intention of going home. He was arrested as he made port and tried. One of his former (piratical) crew stepped forward and blamed Kidd for the murder of the plague victim. Kidd had no need to be a pirate. He was a respected and wealthy land owner/governor.
