Early Life:
There is much speculation as to who his father is. His mother died when he was four. He spent much of his early years, raised on the coast, daydreaming of someday becoming a sailor. His dreams were inspired by the tales he heard from sailors who visited his town.
How he became a pirate:
Cofresi set sail abroad his schooner, "Ana", with a crew from Cabo Rojo and attacked ships that did not fly the Royal Spanish Flag.
His main territory:
The Caribbean. He established a hideout in Mona island between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Famous/Infamous for:
Cofresi was protected by the locals from the authorities. He shared his treasures with the needy and was regarded by many as the Puerto Rican version of "Robin Hood".

He spent a lot of time on the shores of the Dominican Republic. The town of Cofresi in the Dominican Republic is named for him, and it is alleged that his treasure remains buried there.
Notable battles:
In 1824, Captain John Slout of the US schooner "Grampus" engaged Cofresi in a fierce battle. Cofresi was catpured along with 11 crew members and were turned over to the Spanish government, who had received numerous complaints from vessels that had been attacked by the Pirate Cofresi.
Finally met his end:
Roberto Cofresi was jailed in El Castillo del Morro in San Juan where he tried by a Spanish military court, and on March 29, 1825 he was excuted by a firing squad. He is buried in the on a hill behind el Cementerio Antiguo de San Juan contrary to folklore which says that he is buried in the cemetery. A statue of him was erected in his honor at Boqueron beach in Cabo Rojo.

He was actually skinned alive, dragged thru the whole city and then burried on the only entrance of the cementary so all the people that enter and/or exited the cementary would step on him.
