How to be a Successful CaptainThis is a featured page

HA!
Or:

"How to be loved by your crew while stealing them blind"

Foreword: Pirate Discipline versus Naval Discipline

A common mistake one might make coming into this game is not realizing that as a pirate, YOU HAVE NO REAL AUTHORITY. When a Naval Officer gives an order, he has the entirety of the Service behind him. A legal chain of command, stretching all the way up to God/The Queen/The President/El Jefe/Zarkon from Planet X and all the way down to the lowliest bilge-sucker. There are clear, written rules, telling you where you fit in.

When a pirate gives an order, he has nothing behind him to enforce it save for his powers of persuasion. You must essentially convince other pirates that it is in their best interests to obey you, rather than staging a mutiny.

What interests a pirate? It isn't Love of Country, good captain. For the purposes of this game:

  • GOLD
  • THEIR LIVES (remaining on the ship)
  • GOLD
  • PROBABLY ALCOHOL
  • GOLD

Get the picture? As Captain in this game, you have the lion's share of the most persuasive argument there is: The Money. Use it skillfully, you can remain a happy captain for the entire game and retire wealthy. Use it poorly, and you'll find yourself adrift and with barely enough for passage back home. Let's begin.

PART ONE: GENEROSITY

Many people despise wealth, but few know how to give it away.
-François de La Rochefoucauld

Scenario: You are the newly-elected Captain of a pirate ship. You and your crew of 15 have recently un-earthed (or un-watered) a chest full of gold totalling - to pick a number out of thin air - 40,000 pieces. By the Pirate Code, you control fully half of the haul, your two officers control a quarter, and the remainder is divided equally among the remainder of the crew. To sum:

YOU

20,000 Pieces

OFFICERS (2)

5,000 Pieces each

SCUM (5)
(remnants of Black Team)

2,000 Pieces each

LOWLY SCUM (8)
(remnants of Red Team)

0 Pieces each

Extremely Important Addendum: You are only Captain at the crew's pleasure; the crew can mutiny by securing a unanimous vote against you at the next Pirate's Court in which case you are OUT OF THE GAME.

What would you do in this situation to celebrate your new found position, foster goodwill amongst the ranks and entrench yourself solidly into the Captaincy (with much greater rewards on the horizon)?

PART ONE-A: WHAT NOT TO DO

For our first lesson, let's call our purely hypothetical Captain...

NOT YOURS

"CAPTAIN BULLSEYE"

just for the sake of this discussion.

Wise Cap'n Bullseye is a simple man, with simple tastes. He comes from a Naval background (see above), and insists upon order and respect aboard his vessel. Everything ship-shape, A.J. Squared Away for this Cap'n. That includes the loot. Especially the loot.

Captain Bullseye's extremely detailed plan for his share of the loot consists of:

  1. Taking the Loot
  2. Putting it in his pocket
  3. Cackling madly with the pure, sweet, un-adulterated POWER of his position! **gasp**
  4. Nap time

Certainly it is the Captain's prerogative to keep his share of the loot. After all, it is a full TWO PERCENT of the possible MILLION IN GOLD at stake, here. Why would he want to risk that? What could he possibly gain by giving up this hard-earned, 20,000 pieces of RESPECT?

To Be Continued with PART ONE-B: PERHAPS A BETTER OPTION

I would use a "share" system to distribute the booty, something like:
Captain: 10 shares
Officers: 5 shares each, 10 total
"Scum": 3 shares each, 15 shares total
"Lowly Scum": 1 share each, 8 total

That gives a total of 43 shares. Take 40k, divide by 43 and you get 930 (plus a bit, but we'll get to that later).

Each of the eight "Lowly Scum" gets 930 gold (total of 7,440 gold). Each of the five "Scum" gets 2790 gold (total of 13,950). Each officer gets 4,650 (total of 9,300). That comes to 30,690 if my high school education was worth its salt, leaving 9,310 for the captain (the extra 10 coins comes from the remainder of the division above). I think my method would keep people happy.

So if I understand it, you only need 1 or maybe 2 crewmwmbers to be kept happy. If so then just reward 1 or 2. You keep the lions share and are protected from a mutiny by crew not willing to bit the hand that feed them.

It is one crew and he would remain captain, even taking in a slightly larger than average haul, if he spread the wealth a bit more. He could have taken a quarter of his share and spread it equally to everyone, including the Black Crew. People would still gripe, but they would know that they would at least get something for their effort.
