I was on the Harvey Gamage for a week in the summer of 1990, studying marine mammals! I keep thinking back to that experience while watching PM.

When I heard the ship was to be the Picton Castle, I was pretty excited. Since it was pretty much the only ship I've ever been on. It sure does look prettier and a lot cleaner than when I saw it last summer at the Summerside PEI wharf. Got a whole tour and all 'cause my dad is a prominient businessman with connections (don't ask me to who). Haha, I went to a private party with muscles and drinks on a pirate ship! Anyway though, might have to check this show out.

I don't know how they'll do things during the show, but I've been on board that ship.
She is the barque "Picton Castle". Contestants will probably be staying in the main salon. There are bunks, upper and lower, along the walls, each about 7 x 3 x 3 feet, with a curtain for privacy. Under the bottom bunks is a place to store gear. There are tables in the salon, for when the weather's too bad to eat on deck. And there's a small head just off the salon, with a shower (unheated).
There's usually a few officers (Captain, First Mate, etc.), lead seamen to be in charge of the watches, and trainees who come on board to learn how to sail. I have no idea how much actual sailing the contestants will be doing. From the descriptions I've read, it sounds like most of the challenges involve going ashore and finding things on the island. But the preview pics show people furling sail and raising the anchor, too.

At exactly 8:09 EST the first "matey" lost her cookies - and it was a relatively calm sea. The right person was set adrift - thought he could hold the rest of the ship captive by stealing the compasses - sun comes up in the east and sets in the west - that's not too hard to figure out for a direction during the daytime when they'll be doing most of their pirate challenges.

As already stated, life aboard the ship will be much better than Survivor.
Having spent time aboard the PC, the bunks are dry, comfy, and usually bug free. The food is always good, at least it was for us.
I really hope to see Chibley and Captain Dan on the show, as well as the rest of the crew of the PC.
I think there will be plenty for the contestants to do on board, 33 days is barely enough time to learn all of the lines!
This is going to be a great show, cant wait to see it!

Well, I see 33 days, and I think you're right, not nearly enough time to learn the ropes, not to mention navigating and finding position, that could be difficult too. I suspect that means they have been given sail training prior to start of the show I figure, there's just to much to know isn't there. Either that or they just ride at anchor the whole time.

this is the ship that used to take people around the world for 18 months. It's a shame that the HMS Rose (now the Surprise) couldn't be used. I was on her as crew in '94, and she's a bit closer in rig style to the age of pirates than a barque. Ship rig has squares on all three masts.

I was on her from May to June as a guest lecturer on naval and maritime history and crew member on "C" watch of the scurvy dogs. I joined her in Newport and had to fly out from Halifax in late June, just before going to the Great Lakes.
