A nice story, but pirates were active in European water long before the 1300s. One of the earliest European pirates to gain infamous reputation was Eustace the Monk who, constantly switching allegiances, sailed against both English and French ships in the English channel during the 1200s.
And don't forget that, for all intents and purposes, the Viking raiders of the eleventh, twelth and thirteenth centuries can be defined as pirates. The templars may have become pirates, but they did not originate European piracy. |
