TERM

DEFINITION

Avast
To stop, to halt.

Ballot

Card used to vote at Pirates’ Court. Only Servants who are safe from elimination receive the card.
Black Spot
The mark given to the 3 Pirates who have been marked for elimination by the Captain of the Ship and his Officers. The Black Spot is delivered in a Summons by the 2 Officers. Those who receive the Black Spot become Marked Men/Women.
Bosun
The pirate with no official rank, charged with assigning duties aboard the ship and maintaining order. This position is like the union representative or in other words, the drill sergeant.
Chest of Zanzibar

The chest in which Captain Henry Steel stored the maps, clues and tools needed to find his crew’s hidden treasure as well as his own. The chest consists of 15 locked compartments. Each compartment is unlocked by the key that opened the treasure chest found on the previous expedition. Inside each drawer is a map AND something the Pirates can continue to use on the show (e.g. compass, matches, telescope, etc).

Code of Conduct

A set of rules all Pirates must adhere to are posted from the moment they board the Picton Castle.The rules are as follows:
1. Every Pirate shall obey the Captain’s command.
2. All Pirates shall perform their share of duties aboard the ship.
3. No Pirate shall strike another. That Pirate who does will be put ashore.
4. Pirates shall protect their own bounty.
5. If any Pirate shall part the ship’s company, that Pirate shall take all the treasure they have amassed.
6. At the Captain’s discretion, treachery is punishable by denial of food.
7. Pirates shall take on the responsibility of preparing fare for the crew.
8. Every Pirate shall have equal title to fresh water and strong liquors.
9. All bounty shall be split according to the Pirate Master code.
10. Possession is nine tenths of the law.

Crew
Term used to describe a team of Pirates. Pirates are split into 2 Crews for an expedition.
Cut Adrift

The means by which a Pirate is eliminated from the show.

D - G

Demoted
Refers to the Pirates who were on the winning Crew but were not selected as Officers. In addition, anyone who has no rank, including a replaced Officer or Captain is considered “Demoted”.
Expedition
The search for treasure on which both crews embark from the Pirate ship during every episode.

M - Q
Marked Pirates

The 3 Pirates that the Captain of the Ship and his Officers pick for elimination. The 3 Marked Pirates must defend themselves in front of everyone on deck at Pirates’ Court. In the end, there is a vote. If there is no mutiny, the Marked Pirate with the most number of ballots is Cut Adrift.
Mutiny

Mutiny occurs at the conclusion of Pirates’ Court if there is a unanimous ballot for it and the 2 Officers support it. A successful Mutiny results in forcing the Captain being cut adrift.
Picton Castle

The Pirate ship.
Provost

The muscle, the enforcer of rules aboard the Pirate Ship.
Pirates’ Court

The elimination ceremony. Taking place on the ship’s deck, the 3 Marked Pirates defend themselves at Pirates’ Court. In the end, the other Pirates cast a ballot for one of the Marked Pirates to eliminate or for mutiny. The Marked Pirate with the most number of ballots is Cut Adrift. However, if there is a unanimous vote for Mutiny and the 2 Officers support it then the Captain of the Ship is cut adrift.





R - Z

Scuttlebutt
The water supply pump at the midships area of the Pirate Ship. This is the original water cooler, hence the term Scuttlebutt also meaning gossip.
