It is part of the country of Antigua and Barbuda and is roughly 87 kilometers(54 miles). The indigenous West Indians made excellent sea vessels that were to sail the Atlantic and Caribbean.The island was supposedly named by Christopher Columbus in honor of the Santa
Maria La Antigua Cathedral in Seville.
Slaves were brought in from Africa to work the sugar crops.they adapted to the new environment well.

Tortuga is a Caribbean Island that is part of Haiti. Its name in Spanish and French means "Turtle Island", and in the 17th century it was a major center of piracy.
