The producer of the St. Louis Renaissance Faire, Doug Glenn, managed to pull off a great new show! Reworking his existing cast members into subjects and denizens of Fort Royal on Martinique in the Golden Age of Piracy, the event closed on a wildly successful note, having an equal number of attendees as a normal day of their well established Renaissance Faire event. All of the merchants were wildly delighted with the amount of business that they did as well. In 2007 they will be holding the Pirate Festival for three full weekends, so confidant is Doug and his staff of the staying power of this event. Last year we were fortunate enough to share the fun on the second weekend not only with the core cast, but with "The Limey Birds" "The Pirate Shantyman and the Bonny Lass," "Three Pints Gone," "Bounding Main," "Starboard Bound" and many other fine acts. The Door County Maritime Museumhas prepared a new Pirate Exhibit, a show to appeal to the fascination shared by adults and children alike. Hailed from: Wales, UK	Died: August 25, 1688

	Her main territory:
	Famous/Infamous for: When he died in 1688, there were almost no pirates left. Morgan was one of the most ruthless and brutal of all pirates. His wit and force made him one of the most respected and feared pirates of all time. He has been said to be the king of all pirates. He was knighted and made lefttenant of Jamica.
	Notable battles:
	Finally met his end: Sir Henry Morgan, the greatest buccaneer, died on August 25, 1688. The Governor of Jamaica, the Duke of Albemarle immediately ordered a state funeral. Morgans body was taken to the King’s House at Port Royale for viewing by friends, family and drink mates. The funeral procession with Morgan atop a gun carriage was slow and mournful. Sir Harry was taken to the church of St. Peters which boasted the tallest stone tower in the city. A church Sir Harry had donated much of the money to build. Dr. Longworth gave a fine eulogy for ole Harry. Many a tears was seen to flow as they carried him to the cemetery of the Palisadoes and laid poor Harry to rest. Captain Wright ordered the guncrew of the Assistance to give him a twenty two gun salute. The HMS Drake, which lay in harbor and many other warships, echoed the salute. After the last of the warships guns had fired, the merchant ships in one thunderous explosion fired their guns as well. Never again will such as Captain Henry Morgan sail these waters.

El Pirata Cofresi (Roberto Cofresi)

Pirate Name: Roberto Cofresi	Born: 1791
Hailed from: Puerto Rico	Died: 1825

Physical characteristics:

Early Life:
There is much speculation as to who his father is. His mother died when he was four. He spent much of his early years, raised on the coast, daydreaming of someday becoming a sailor. His dreams were inspired by the tales he heard from sailors who visited his town.

How he became a pirate:
Cofresi set sail abroad his schooner, "Ana", with a crew from Cabo Rojo and attacked ships that did not fly the Royal Spanish Flag.

His main territory:
The Caribbean. He established a hideout in Mona island between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Famous/Infamous for:
Cofresi was protected by the locals from the authorities. He shared his treasures with the needy and was regarded by many as the Puerto Rican version of "Robin Hood".

He spent a lot of time on the shores of the Dominican Republic. The town of Cofresi in the Dominican Republic is named for him, and it is alleged that his treasure remains buried there.

Notable battles:
In 1824, Captain John Slout of the US schooner "Grampus" engaged Cofresi in a fierce battle. Cofresi was catpured along with 11 crew members and were turned over to the Spanish government, who had received numerous complaints from vessels that had been attacked by the Pirate Cofresi.

Finally met his end:
Roberto Cofresi was jailed in El Castillo del Morro in San Juan where he tried by a Spanish military court, and on March 29, 1825 he was excuted by a firing squad. He is buried in the on a hill behind el Cementerio Antiguo de San Juan contrary to folklore which says that he is buried in the cemetery. A statue of him was erected in his honor at Boqueron beach in Cabo Rojo.

How he became a pirate:
Black Bart started his pirating career late in life. He was third mate aboard a slave ship when it was captured by Pirrate Hywel Davis on the sRover. Within two months, Bart was elected captain of the pirate following the demise of Captain Davis.he also had the worlds biggest kindey stone it was small

His main territory:at the wrong airport
Black Barts main territories mainly included the American Colonies, the Caribbean, and the coast of West Africa.

Famous/Infamous for: giving aids

Notable battles: when he fought peter griffin i was in a dogs nose for 3 years

Finally met his end:
was a sumo wrestler who had herpes. The Captain Challoner Ogle captured Barts consort, the 32 gun Great Ranger. Ogles ship, the Swallow, arrived at Barts the next day and Roberts ordered his ships to sail towards Ogles in attempt to slip past Ogle and run. Ogle fired a broadside of grapeshot at close range and Black Bart was killed instantly. His crew through the body overboard to avoid is corpse being captured.

Pirate Name: Anne Bonny	Born: between 1697 and 1705
Hailed from: County Cork, Ireland	Died:1782 but not 100% sure : )

Physical characteristics:

Early Life: Her father, attorney William Cormac, had an affair with his maidservant Mary or Peg Brennan. She became pregnant with Anne and the affair became public. William married Ms. Brennan then moved the family from Ireland to Charleston, South Carolina. There he made a fortune and bought a plantation where Anne grew up.

How she became a pirate: When Anne was 16, she fell in love with and married a small time pirate (privateer? pirate hunter?) named James Bonny. Her father disowned her. James moved with Anne to the Bahamas. There she began to mingle with pirates. James began turning pirates in to the governor of Nassau. Anne despised him, finding herself more attracted to the real pirates - like "Calico" Jack Rackham.

She met Jack Rackham and had an affair. In order to avoid superstition and join Jack's crew, Anne dressed herself up as a man.

Her main territory: Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Turk and Caicos Islands.

Famous/Infamous for: She was a female pirate. She never commanded her own ship.

Notable battles: Jonathan Barnet, employee of the Jamacian government attacked Rackham and his crew while they were drunk. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were sober and "fought fiercely" while managing to "hold off Barnet's troops." The entire crew was captured.

Notable quote: As her mate Jack was brought to trial, she visited him on the morning of his execution and said "I am sorry to see you here, but if you had fought like a man, you needn't be hang'd like a dog."

Finally met her end: Mysteriously disappeared At her trial, both her and Mary Read were sentenced to hang. But, they were spared when they "plead their bellies." Meaning they were both pregnant, so the court would not hang an innocent child. It is said that both were carrying Calico Jack Rackham's child. And both ladies had given birth to a child before. Mary died in prison before the sentence could be carried out, and their are two stories of what happened to Anne. One was that a Doctor had taken fancy to ther and notified her father who was known in Jamaica, and had pull with the Governor, enough to get her pardoned. The other story was that Anne, on a previous occasion told the Governor of a plot to kill him, and he pardoned her with the proviso that she leave the Caribbean and never return. And as stated previously, she did disappear. (Note: I am writing a novel, and as a result of research the facts reported are everything that is known of what happened to Anne and Mary)

Biggest myths: Anne started a fire on here father's plantation in retaliation for her father disowning her over marrying the pirate James Bonny. Also rumoured to have had a sexual relationship with Mary Reade

Anne Bonny was born in County Cork, in Ireland. She traveled to the Caribbean with her husband, James Bonny. James Bonny was either a small time pirate himself, a privateer in the employ of the British Crown, or a Pirate Hunter, paid by either the Royal Governor of the Bahamas or the Crown of England. Whatever the truth is, Anne Bonny became enamoured of the pirate life. She disguised herself as a man, and joined Calico Jack Rakham's crew, along with Mary Reade. Anne and Mary met, and discovered each other's true gender, which they agreed to keep secret. Afterward, it is rumoured, she began a romantic affair with Mary Reade. She and Mary were allegedly discovered when Calico Jack walked in on the two of them, "in the act." He evidently kept the secret, probably in exchange for sexual favours. Other sources suggest that Jack became jealous of Anne's friendship with Mary. When Mary revealed that she was a woman, Jack was pacified, understanding that theirs was a friendship, nothing more.
Anne Bonny stayed undercover as a man, until she became pregnant with Jack's child. She spent her preganancy on an island in the Caribbean with Jack's friends. After giving birth, she returned to the ship. She was eventually accepted as a member of the crew. Some rumours suggest that James, assuming he was a pirate hunter, employed Anne as a spy, no evidence exists to support the claim.

Joe Don “J.D.” Morton was born and raised by his mother and two sisters, one of which is deaf, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He played football throughout high school and then attended college for two years at Scottsdale Community College. At 20, he took off to Alaska to pursue a job in the fishing industry. He spent the summer working in canneries and on a fishing boat. He then decided to join the United States Navy and successfully trained at the Search and Rescue Swimmer School. Shortly after he finished his Navy service, he saw a documentary on smoke-jumpers and that's all he needed to see. He attended smoke-jumping school in Redding, CA, with the United States Forest Service and then transferred back to Alaska. He then bought 10 acres of land in Alaska and built a cabin, where he currently resides with his black lab, Anna.

How he became a pirate: He overthrew the captain and took control of the ship.

His main territory:
Black Sam sailed the waters from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico, around Florida and the Caribbean Sea.

Famous/Infamous for: Carrying a very large booty on the ship.

Notable battles:

Finally met his end:
Died in the wreck of the Whydah when it capsized in the Atlantic; 146 pirates drowned, and the only two survivors were captured and tried.

Biggest myths:

Trivia: Black Sam Bellamy was known to entertain his crew with ornate prose, and considered himself a master at oration. His concern for the well-being of prisoners and his crew set him aside as a captain.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the Captain of the Edinburgh Trader is called Bellamy.

Pirate Name:William Trader Jack	Born:1756
Hailed from:Seville, Spain (assumed)	Died:1822

Physical characteristics:Trader Jack was over six feet tall, muscular, broad of shoulder and narrow of hip, with the carriage of the trained fighting man. He had a long scar that ran the length of his face. Handsome, his features were regular, and clear cut with long dark hair and a black beard. Piercing dark blue eyes.
Early Life:Much of his early life was never known. Some have said that he was the child of a Spanish nobleman and a peasant girl. He joined the Naval Academy and went on to become a well-respected Commander of a privateer. By the age of 27 he was an Admiral and naval attaché to the king of Spain. Some say he was actually a mercenary backed by the Spanish government and several New World investors to track down pirates and reclaim their stolen wares.
How he became a pirate:Instead of being acclaimed a national hero, a jealous member of the Royal family accused him of becoming a pirate. Charges of theft were soon invented against him and his arrest was authorized. So Trader Jack commandeered a ship and sailed for the Americas and a life of piracy. Soon towns all over New England would each have their own tale of Trader Jack secreting his treasures in the darkness of night.
His main territory:Cape Cod and the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The waters off the coast of New England down the North American coastline to the Florida peninsula.
Famous/Infamous for:Martha’s Vineyard was home to many buccaneers and fishermen, but Trader Jack organized them into a company of privateers and smugglers. He built houses, cottages, warehouses, and stockades that held slaves awaiting auction, a cafe, gambling den, and brothel. His men numbered over a thousand; some came from many countries, and included navigators, gunners, carpenters, cooks, sail makers and riggers. They plundered cargoes of ships for slaves, silks, spices, jewels, furniture, household goods, art, food, and medicines. His fleet consisted of Martha’s Revenge and three other ships as well, the Alabama, the Shenandoah and a tender, which served the three fighting ships. He operated a vast smuggling network in and around Cape Cod and the islands for over twenty years. Many called him a pirate, others called him a friend, after his ship's famous battle with the more heavily gunned British frigate Endymion, and they all called him hero.
Notable battles:No name was given to this battle with the more heavily gunned British frigate Endymion, off the southeastern tip of Martha's Vineyard. Some have called it The Battle of Noepe.
Finally met his end:In the spring of 1822, on the very day Trader Jack and his crew were to begin dividing up the booty amassed during 38 years of pirating together a rich merchantman was seen, and the opportunity for one last prize just seemed too good to miss. Trader Jack and his crew put to sea in pursuit of the prize, but coming within range, they were shocked when she hoisted the flag of the US Navy and ran out her cannons. A fierce battle ensued; the American cannonballs repeatedly punctured the hull of Trader Jack’s flagship, while still more shattered her masts. Martha’s Revenge was sinking as the frigate USS Potomac approached to finish the job. Realizing he could not win it, Trader Jack wrapped himself in his anchor chain and leapt to Davy Jones' locker in the depths of the Atlantic, off the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The rest of his crew were either killed in the battle or were captured and tried as pirates, later to be executed.
Biggest myths:Trader Jack is said to have more than a dozen wives scattered from the coast of Maine down to Florida. It was also rumored that he had a wife and son who had been educated at Harvard, living in Boston, though the truth of his early life was never known.

Have you been to Dominica?

Ah yes I, Annie Cook, have been to the exotic isle of Dominica & the memories be ever so sweet! It were my favorite island on a 6-island hop off a cruising ship. The best part were the trek thru the rain forest. Then of course it rained, soaking us to the bone with the refreshing nectar of the steamy jungle.

We climbed the steep cliffs to see the Trafalgar Falls cascading side by side with a rainbow between them & then took a dip down in the cool waters of the Emerald Pool at the bottom of another 40 ft. falls. Not being shy about disrobing in front of the hoards of tourists standing on the platforms above, I & my sister put on quite a show for those not accustomed to our natural version of swimming attire.

To those who stood agog I say - You missed so very much by not joining us in that pool. The crystal waters were ever so cool & soothing to the body, mind & spirit! Then after you left, oh after you left, the pirates they came & my captain did join me in the pool . He were not shy & it were the first time we were together in such a way. But never were it the last!
